I told you a couple of weeks ago about speaking to a group of young female field hockey players about taking care of their hearts – a fun first for me to speak to mostly young teens.  I had another first this past week as well.  Giving a “Go Healthy” class at the Children’s Museum in Greensboro to a group of 17 children ranging in age from about 3 to 7.  One of those 17 was my 5 year old granddaughter, Iryss…..my parents were there as observers as well.  They happened to be in town for my birthday and tagged along.  I have always loved being around children, and having the opportunity to help them learn about healthy lifestyle habits is a perfect fit for me. Having my granddaughter in the class meant a lot to me.  Not just because she was going to have fun and learn a good lesson about being healthy; but because it gives me the chance to lead by example about giving to others as a volunteer.  It is the same life lesson I was able to teach her mother, my daughter, in the same way….by living it.Having my parents there with me as observes really did complete the circle.  I was honored that they could see first hand the lessons they taught me about being giving to others and being generous with self are a very important part of my life.  It also made me realize that you are never too old to enjoy your parents pride and praise. Another first for me happened at the Tanglewood Heart Walk on Sunday.  Their 2009 Lifestyle Change Award winner had completely turned his health around by loosing 183 pounds through diabetic eating plan and exercise.  Not only is our weight loss amounts identical, there are so many things about our journey that were similar – it is uncanny. This was a very emotional experience for me; there just aren’t that many people out there who share such an experience.  I am pretty sure I have made a friend for life!
