I have such a great appreciation of all the hard work that goes into putting this event together and all the wonderful who make this happen, year after year.  In early spring, I got my first “behind the scenes” exposure to the process.  I spoke at an ADA event to create awareness among business leaders.  Several weeks later, there was a team leader meeting to attend.  Next, a couple of planning committee sessions…..all leading up to my predawn arrival at the walk site in Raleigh NC on Saturday morning.  It’s hard to believe that in a matter of about 90 minutes an empty lot is transformed into a full fledged event complete with music, food, giant blow up slide and castle, team tents, information tents, and people everywhere you look.  Each and every one of the people there is truly the best part.My job on Saturday was to help check in and register walkers as they arrived.  Walkers who wish to be identified as being diabetic can sign up as a “Red Strider” and received a red cap to wear.  It is quite moving to look out and see the many red caps sprinkled about.  And even more touching are the people who love those “Red Striders”, right by their side, just as involved and engaged.  Each person had their own reason for being there; yet we were all there for a single cause:  STOP diabetes. If you have never participated in a Step Out Walk, I strongly encourage you to sign up for the walk in your area.  I promise you will have a great time and raise money for a great cause.  If I can help you get started, or would like to share your experience with Step Out, I’d love to hear from you.  Be great, be a volunteer!“Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” – Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
