2011 Weekend for Women Conference Presenters

 

Saturday 9am, Keynote Speaker

Gloria Loring is a consummate singer and entertainer. She is the recording artist of the #1 hit song "Friends and Lovers", co-composer of television theme songs for "Diff'rent Strokes" and "The Facts of Life”, an audience favorite from daytime TV's "Days of Our Lives", author of four books, inspirational speaker, mother of a child with diabetes, and one of the few artists to sing two nominated songs at the Academy Awards. Ms. Loring serves as a spokesperson for the Juvinile Diabetes Research Foundation and is known as a fierce advocate for those living with chronic illness.

Elizabeth Holt, MD, PhD is currently Assistant Consulting Professor of Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina.  She is in the private practice of General Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism in Raleigh, NC.  She has twice been named one of America’s Top Physicians by Consumers’ Research Council of America and is a two-time winner of the Patients’ Choice award.

Nancy McGreal, MD has developed an interest in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and continuity of care in the treatment of chronic disease after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with degrees in biology and psychology. She attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine. A member of the American Gastroenterological Association, Dr. McGreal is currently pursuing a combined fellowship in both adult and pediatric gastroenterology with a concentration in IBD. She intends to utilize her unique combined adult/pediatric training to care for children and adolescents afflicted with IBD and aid their transition to adulthood. Additionally, Dr. McGreal has served as the medical director of Camp Oasis for the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) for three years.

Thelsa Pulikkotil, MD completed medical school at the University of Mumbai’s D.Y. Patil Medical College. Thelsa is currently a cardiology fellow at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.

Gary Scheiner, CDE, has lived with Type 1 diabetes for 25 years. He earned a BA in Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis and a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology from Benedictine University.  He received his diabetes training with the Joslin Diabetes Center.  He serves as a Board of Directors Officer for the Diabetes Exercise & Sports Association and serves on the faculty of Children with Diabetes.  He is an active volunteer for the ADA, JDRF and Setebaid Diabetes Camps. He owns and operates Integrated Diabetes Services, a private practice located just outside of Philadelphia specializing in intensive blood glucose control for children and adults. He and his staff are now dedicating a part of the practice to the management of pregnancy in Type 1 diabetes. Kathy Pereira, MSN, FNP-BC, holds dual appointments as Assistant Clinical Professor at the Duke School of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition of the Duke University Medical Center. She earned her BSN at the University of Virginia and her MSN in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at Duke University Medical Center School of Nursing. She has considerable experience in the clinical care of patients with complicated diabetes, and is board certified in Advanced Diabetes Management. She also teaches the Advanced Diabetes Management class for practitioner students at the SON.

Connie Hanham-Cain RN, CDE was diagnosed with Type 1diabetes in 1963 at the age of eight. Her life includes extensive experience in dance and theatre arts, travel, and practice of transpersonal healing traditions. She lives in upstate NY with husband Ben and nine rescue cats, where she is Diabetes Resource Coordinator for Visiting Nurse Service of Schenectady and Saratoga Counties.

Claire M. Blum, MS Ed, RN, CDE was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 17 and has lived with diabetes for more than 30 years. She lives in Chattanooga TN, and serves as Program Coordinator for Partners & Peers for Diabetes Care, Inc., out of desire to empower people with diabetes to actively participate in their health care.

Cindi Goldman-Patin, RN, BSN, CDE, BA has been living with Type 1 diabetes for 38 years having been diagnosed at the age of 17 months. She lives in the beautiful Berkshires in Massachusetts with her husband and three cats, and serves as the only Certified Diabetes Educator at Canyon Ranch Health Resorts.

Saturday 2:45pm, Food & Nutrition

Elisabetta Politi, RD, MPH, LDN, CDE is nutrition director at the Duke University Diet & Fitness Center. She has over 18 years experience as a registered dietitian. Elisabetta is a certified diabetes educator, and works closely with diabetic patients. She holds a B. S. in Food Science and Technology from the University of Milan, and a Master in Public Health Nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is treasurer for the North Carolina Dietetic Association and a past-president for the Durham Chapel Hill Dietetic Association.

Camille Izlar, MR, RD, CDE, BC-ADM has been a diabetes Educator at UNC Diabetes Care Center since 1995. She completed medical school at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro followed by residencies and fellowships at UNC-Chapel Hill. She has been in Diabetes Education since 1989. Camille has lived with Type 1 diabetes for 42 years. Camille is also an avid runner and has completed several marathons.

Nancy Zucker, PhD serves as the director of the Duke Center for Eating Disorders. She holds a PhD from Duke University in Clinical Psychology. Nancy’s current research focuses on developing novel treatments for individuals with eating disorders and children who struggle with weight management as well as integration of family members into effective treatment strategies.

 

Saturday 6:00pm, Flourishing with Diabetes

 

Riva Greenberg was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 18 and today works as a patient-expert. Riva has written two books, “50 Diabetes Myths That Can Ruin Your Life and the 50 Diabetes Truths That Can Save It” and “The ABC’s Of Loving Yourself With Diabetes”, writes for the Huffington Post and blogs on her web site, Diabetes Stories. Riva is a health coach and gives workshops to help patients flourish with diabetes and help medical professionals work more effectively with patients. Riva is also an advisor to Roche Diabetes Care, CanAm Care and a member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators.

Rhonda Merwin, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center. She is an expert in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and specializes in the treatment of disordered eating and body image. She has grant support for her research on the ability to read and respond to visceral cues, antecedents to eating disorder symptomatology among individuals with type 1 diabetes, and the development of a family-based ACT intervention for anorexia nervosa.

Lisa Honeycutt, MA, LPC will join Dr. Merwin. Lisa is a licensed professional counselor with a background in marriage and family therapy. She currently serves as a Project Coordinator within the Duke Center for Eating Disorders.

Kelly Close is president of Close Concerns, Inc., a healthcare information firm focused on diabetes and obesity that she founded in 2002. Kelly is editor-in-chief of diaTribe, a monthly online newsletter focused on new research and products for people with diabetes (diaTribe.us). She also leads Closer Look and Diabetes Close Up, industry news services covering the diabetes market. Kelly's passion for the field comes from her extensive professional work as well as her personal experience as a patient with type 1 diabetes for nearly 25 years. Kelly lives in San Francisco with her husband and three young children; she is very involved in advocacy and is VP of Outreach for the northern California JDRF. She is a graduate of Amherst College and Harvard Business School.

Sabrina Rockoff, JD is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law and is currently employed by Kilpatrick Stockton Law Firm in Raleigh, NC. She specializes in defending employment discrimination lawsuits, advising on employee relations issues, and representing employers on union matters. She has recent experience counseling clients regarding issues under the Americans with Disabilities Act, Age Discrimination Employment Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act.

Sunday 11:45, Accepting Me & Making a Difference

Ann Albright, RD, CDE is the Director of the Division of Diabetes Translation at the Centers for Disease Control where she leads a team of more than 100 who strive to eliminate the preventable burden of diabetes through leadership, research, programs, and policies that translate science into practice. Dr. Albright has also served as Chief of the California Diabetes Program for the California Department of Health Services. Dr. Albright is well known for her work in diabetes including the implementation of evidence-based diabetes care guidelines, work on models of care in community clinics, application of diabetes prevention, and development of campaigns to increase the understanding of diabetes and importance of blood glucose, blood pressure, and lipid control. Dr. Albright has also lived with diabetes for many years.

Brandy Barnes, MSW is the Founder/Executive Director of DiabetesSisters. She received her undergraduate degree in psychology and her master’s degree in social work with a concentration in health settings from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She gained experience in both the nonprofit and for-profit worlds through her work in diabetes clinical research (UNC Diabetes Care Center), nonprofit/volunteer management (American Cancer Society), and diabetes medical sales/marketing (Sanofi-Aventis). Her areas of interest include women’s issues, mind-body connection in disease management, and peer support models. She is a member of the North Carolina Diabetes Advisory Council and the American Diabetes Association's Women's Workgroup. She has lived with diabetes for 21 years and is the mother of a six-year old daughter.

Janet Doucette, MA, LMHC, is a licensed, clinical psychotherapist, biofeedback therapist and life management consultant who specializes in mind-body medicine and the use of spirituality as a resource in managing the stress of living with a chronic illness. Janet currently works at Canyon Ranch in the department of Life Management where she provides wellness lifestyle consultations, conducts meditation workshops, and lectures weekly. She is also the founder of Mindful Technology, a web-based company that provides education, information, techniques, and training to people seeking ways to transform stress into optimal lives.

Saturday 8am, Beginning an Exercise Program

Tim Kelly, NFPT & Alison Hanna- Katschkowsky are from CU Fitness located in downtown Raleigh. They do personal training and conduct a variety of women’s fitness and self development programs at their studio. There is a combined experience level of over 50 years in the health and fitness industry at CU Fitness whose clientele is primarily female based.

Saturday 8am, Tai Chi

Judith Jones Ambrosini is a diabetes journalist and writer currently working on book about female athletes with diabetes, titled The Sisterhood of Diabetes. She has served on the Boards of Diabetes Exercise and Sports Association (DESA) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA), New York Affiliate. In 2004, she received the “Lilly for Life” Achievement Award. Judith has been a student of Yang style Tai Chi for many years and has lived with T1 for 49 years.

Ronda Williams is the co-owner of Empower Personal Training, a private health and fitness studio located in Durham, NC. She received her BA in Exercise and Sports Science from UNC and her Master’s degree in Sports Management from NCSU. Ronda is passionate about teaching others about the importance of establishing and maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviors and how to incorporate exercise into their daily lives. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2005.
