It seems that when you have diabetes there is always something to write about…a frustration, a funny mishap, a segment on the diabetes police. But this week is different. Aside from the daily “maintenance”, my diabetes has presented very few problems. I would dare say this is one of those weeks when diabetes doesn’t seem to conspire against my overall happiness. So, I figured I would just tell you a little bit about what my “normal” life has consisted of this week.
Most of the week, I could be found sitting in the front of the heater working on the computer. Otherwise I have been doing housework, planning the garden for Spring (the thought of warm weather makes me smile!) and “overseeing” the progress of our master bathroom remodel (when I say overseeing, this means me talking with hubby while he works on the plumbing!)
Friday night we went out with friends for dinner. This may not seem like a big deal, but hubby and I very rarely go out to eat. Partly because I like to cook and we like to eat at home, but also because I have gluten allergy (as well as a fish, soy, and nut allergy) so you can only imagine what eating out is like…as if my diabetes doesn’t create enough of a problem!
Luckily, none of my allergies are so severe that I have to worry too much about cross contamination, but I try to play it safe most times. Often times it’s just more pleasant to eat at home since I can get what I want to eat and I don’t have to worry about allergens or ask a hundred questions. So, Friday we went to a local tavern, which has an “allergy menu”, so I was able to get a nice dinner and enjoy the company of friends.
Yesterday, I met with a friend for pedicures, which I am not so sure are worth it in the winter time, considering my tootsies are ALWAYS covered with something warm! But it was nice to get out and do something with a girlfriend. I know there is some controversy about diabetics getting pedicures, but the place we go is very nice and clean they autoclave all of their equipment for sterilization, so I feel pretty safe there and I have never had an issue. Plus, my feet are super soft now and my toes are pretty…even if I only see them when I am in the shower or changing from slippers to socks.
Today, hubby and I hunkered down for most of the morning since there was an “arctic wind” that came through NC the last few days. Although we have no snow and it is only 43 degrees currently, this Southern girl freezes as soon as the thermostat hits 60! We did venture out this afternoon to catch a movie and do some loafer-ing around town. But I am glad to be back at home, under a blanket, with the laptop balanced on my knees (are you starting to notice that I don’t like the cold?).
Overall, it has been a nice week and weekend and while writing this, I realize that my life is pretty normal when my diabetes doesn’t get in the way. I know we should all be able to live a normal life, but as we all know, sometimes that just doesn’t happen. When a hassle free week lands at my feet I take it in stride and enjoy the heck out of it, because I figure next week, diabetes might just give me something more to write about.
