Hi sisters! Welcome to the little corner of the Diabetes Sisters website in which I will be hanging out for the next few months. I have always felt that writing an introduction is a lot harder than it seems. I mean, if we were at a party together, I could dazzle you with my smile or say something witty. So, I figured the best way to get to know you all would be to have a virtual party! Grab a snack and something to drink and make yourself at home, I want to tell you a little story about a girl with dirt under her fingernails, thread in her hair and a flock of chickens at her feet.
First, let me take you back to 2007. This young woman was 26. She was just married, finishing graduate school, and completing her first year as a fresh-faced Agriculture teacher in a local school. But that summer her life changed forever. That summer she was diagnosed with the Big D. Teaching and managing her diabetes was difficult. So, she decided to leave her job teaching to focus on her health. It was just too difficult to juggle all of the responsibilities of teaching a class full of youngins’ and juggling the Big D.
Being unemployed and finding herself a little bored…she decided to put to use her skills and knowledge in agriculture. She and her hubby had a humble one-acre plot of land, so she decided to start a small backyard farm, a homestead, if you will. It was not long before she found that eating food she grew herself had a positive impact on her health. And ladies, this is where it all started. Before long, she and her hubby had a thriving garden, blueberry bushes, a flock of chickens, and a bee hive. Making food from scratch and canning and preserving summer’s bounty became second nature. She started sewing and crafting to fill the long winter days when the “farm” was asleep. I guess you can say, she took it back old-school style. She became a homesteader, a homemaker, and an advocate for local agriculture. Four years later, she found that her life as a homesteader, made her happy and fulfilled and most of all healthy. The end…or the beginning.
As you can probably guess, this girl is me. Surprised are you? I thought I could fool you but, you are some smart chicas…you knew it was me from the beginning, huh? Well, there you have it then, a little story about me. I am awfully glad you decided to stop by and hang out here for a while. I look forward to sharing my stories and hearing yours someday too. Please stop by often, the door is always open.
With love,
Melissa
