Getting Excited (Holly)

Diabetes has certainly had its time in the spotlight so far in my pregnancy.  But this week it has behaved enough to let me enjoy being pregnant without worrying constantly.  My belly is protruding out into a nice round shape, and I feel very beautiful when I look at myself in the mirror.  We've also been busy working on the nursery and setting up the room for our little girl.  The room looks like there's someone already living there, even though she won't be here for another three months.  I didn't have any appointments this week and no reminders that I'm considered a high risk pregnancy, just a lovely pregnant woman.

Scary Stuff (Holly)

When I first found out I was pregnant, I wanted to keep it a secret.  Not because I wasn't excited about my pregnancy, but because I wanted to get out of the "danger zone" before telling anybody.  The time period I'm referring to is that crucial first 8-12 weeks where the risk of having a miscarriage are the highest, and having type 1 diabetes put that risk at the front of my mind.  Knowing from the beginning that I was considered a high risk pregnancy made me want to wait until we were absolutely sure this pregnancy was a solid go.  So my husband and I kept mum about my pregnancy until we heard the heartbeat at 8 weeks.  I felt optimistic but cautious that we would have a live baby to hold in a few months.

Plans Going Forward (Holly)

This past week I had another appointment with my OB, and I had a slew of questions regarding the rest of my appointments and the plans for going into labor.  To me, this was the most important appointment so far.  I wanted to make sure that my doctor and I were on the same page, to make sure I knew what he was planning for me and what expectations I had.  He was extremely patient with all of my questions, and I was happy to hear he already had a plan in place for me.

My Mistakes (Holly)

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

There's been a lot of changes going on in my body recently.  My abdominal muscles are stretching out to the point where I have cramps at the most inconvenient times.  My temperament, which used to resemble something of patience, is now extremely short and irritable at the most insignificant things.  And my blood sugars that I used to have somewhat control over, have now decided to go berserk on me for no reason whatsoever.  Well, I know the reason, my pregnancy is progressing and the growing placenta is causing me some major insulin resistance.  I get frustrated when my numbers go wild for an unknown reason, but when I cause the wild roller coaster because of my own mistake, I get more upset.

Reaching New Levels (Holly)

I had read and researched and absorbed all things pregnancy-related and diabetes before I got pregnant.  I read over and over about the dreaded first trimester lows that seem to stick with you no matter what.  I had also read about the haunting insulin resistance that begins in the second trimester.  I knew that by the end of my pregnancy that I would be taking roughly three times the amount of insulin that I normally do.  I knew all these things, but I didn't realize how much they would affect me, emotionally.  I'm taking more insulin, basal and bolus, than I've ever taken in my life, and I'm just over halfway through my pregnancy.
