Hypoglycemia (Megan) PDF Print E-mail

Along with all these wonderful things, I have had a lot of lows lately and I am not 100% sure why. I normally have good control, but these past few days I have had 3 or 4 readings below 50. I typically am very aware when I am dropping or becoming hypoglycemic, but last night I checked before going to bed and I was 43. I did not feel any different! As I have a single room in my dorm, I do not like the prospect of going to sleep unaware that I am in the 40s! Then on Sunday, I was low in the afternoon and I basically had to eat half a can of cake icing before my numbers would come back up. Having to eat when you are not hungry, just because you are low, is frustrating (especially when you are trying to lose a few pounds before the holidays). I do not think my carbohydrate counting is off and my insulin dosage is adequate. I guess it is just part of life with diabetes. There are some days when I am hyperglycemic for no apparent reason, and then some days, I’ll have a weekend like this and have a hard time staying out of the lows. I know it can be unpreventable, but it is still very frustrating. I was supposed to play tennis on Sunday afternoon, but because I had been so low, if I had tried to play I would have just dropped again. It’s a constant balancing game and sometimes, you just get tired of it. So this week, my goal is to try and figure out what caused all these lows and try to prevent them. I am going to try checking more often to see what my blood sugar is doing. I’ll let you know how it goes!

I've noticed the same thing recently. But, I have also come the conclusion that
my lows are due to menstruation (my period). It has only been since the birth
of my daughter that this pattern has become obvious...right before my period
starts and the first few days of my period, I have low blood sugars, then
everything seems to 'normalize' again. Funny how hormones US!

First, I totally agree about the being excited for bball season (if you have an
extra ticket let me know! ) But also I too can't stand it when I have
unexplainable lows...especially when I'm not hungry and have to treat anyway. I
had some issues with that when I started taking Symlin and just a week or so ago
it seemed to come up again (I started symlin over a year ago). It's odd how the
body can be so unpredictable at times. I wish that I were running low THIS
weekend...haha then I'd have an excuse to have an extra serving of pumpkin pie
ha!
