| An End to this Chapter (Laura) |

I suppose it is appropriate to be ending now that Jake is more of a baby than a newborn. He is smiling, cooing at me, and overall just more interactive. I can’t wait for him to get a bit older, and sleep more. I feel like I have been functioning in a fog the past few weeks probably due to a lack of sleep (and hormone changes), but that fog is lifting a bit and things are starting to clear. Jake is still up every few hours to eat. I almost dread going to sleep myself because I know what is in store for me…waking up after only a few hours to change a diaper, check my blood sugar, and feed a hungry baby. It’s like going to sleep is just a teaser. So I think I’ll leave you with my latest dream… a book on diabetes and pregnancy. At a luncheon I attended for women with type I diabetes, I was talking with a friend who is thinking about becoming pregnant, and she was asking if I ever found a book specifically about pregnancy and diabetes. I never did find one, and it’s disappointing that five years later there is still no such book. (The closest thing I found was a book entitled The Diabetic Woman by Lois Jovanovic-Peterson, which has a final chapter specifically about pregnancy and diabetes.) But I want a book dedicated to women with diabetes and pregnancy! One that addresses all of our worries, the extra tests we have during pregnancy, blood sugar issues, risks, diet, exercise, hormone changes etc… everything that comes up for a woman with diabetes while she is pregnant! So, maybe I’ll write one myself. That’s my dream anyway; it may be a few years away, and at least a few months before I even think seriously about it because I definitely need a full night’s sleep before I begin writing any kind of book, but the seed has been planted. (Thank you Sarah for the idea and your encouragement!) So I leave you, a proud mama of three who also happens to have type I diabetes, and I hope that through my blog you’ve gotten some encouragement or at least some hope to know that it can be done! You can have diabetes and a healthy baby. It is a lot of work with plenty of ups and downs (both with blood sugars as well as emotions), but in the end it is worth it. SO, so worth it! I wish you all the best, and if you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please feel free to email me. I know it can get lonely and scary at times. Thank you for reading!
