As I might have mentioned before, I am a camp counselor for children with diabetes and fortunately, I have been able to meet a lot of wonderful people with diabetes. These friendships we have formed over our common bond have allowed us to relate and understand each other on a deeper level. We share the stresses, ups and downs, and just general life with diabetes. For example, we will occasionally text each other and have “Blood Sugars Wars” in which we all have to check our blood sugar and text back to the original person. Basically, it’s a competition for bragging rights for the best blood sugar control. It is kind of funny, but if I know it’s about time for a war, my control actually improves. It holds us accountable if nothing else…no one wants to be the only person with hyperglycemia and everyone else is around 100!! Anyways, back to my break from school work. Tonight I had dinner with two of my friends from camp. We are all in college close by and decided to get together and catch up. It had been a while since we had talked and within minutes, we were all laughing and joking like best friends. There is something about that bond of diabetes. As counselors, we only see each other a few weeks a year, but no matter how long it’s been we can immediately reconnect and start over where we left off. If you do not have this connection currently, this website is for you. It’s full of people who live with diabetes everyday and understand what is going on in your life. So I urge you to reach out and find a diabetes buddy…it could be just what you’re missing!
