Go, go Gadget Girl (Laura) PDF Print E-mail

Anyway, I feel like I’m now a “gadget-girl.” I’ve got my pump, my CGM, my cell phone, and my glucometer either attached to me, or in my purse. So much stuff. I am reminded of “Inspector Gadget,” a cartoon character from my childhood who had all these cool gadgets to get him through tough situations and help him fight off “the bad guys.” Too bad my “gadgets” aren’t an extending arm that could reach across a room to grab something. Instead I’m beeping and buzzing with insulin or glucose levels. Maybe they can invent an alarm that would shout “Go, go gadget,” rather than the various loud buzzings and beepings I’m living with right now.

Hopefully things start to go better with the CGM and it gets a little more accurate. Otherwise, I’m afraid I’ll give up on it again. On the first day I had it on I had to stop twice during a walk to recalibrate it with my meter. During the second stop, after poking my finger twice (again) to get two blood glucose readings to “upload” into my CGM, I turned to my husband and asked, “Did I even like this when I used it before?” He replied, “It was a love-hate relationship.” And then I remembered… I get frustrated when the numbers are off, or my blood sugars are too low or high, but I love it (of course) when my blood sugars are good and within range. Maybe my expectations are too high for the CGM, it’s almost like I only want it to give me good news, or to somehow cure my diabetes so that I’m left with blood sugars that are always within the range of 80-120. Now that’s a gadget I’d gladly wear.

For now I’ll stick with the CGM and all the troubles along the way, in the hopes that it will somehow make me feel more “in control” or at least more informed of my blood sugar levels.

Until next week,

Laura

P.S. Maybe someone can invent a new super hero… “Go, go Gadget Girl. Here to fight off crime and complications from diabetes.”
