Getting Beach-ready (Caroline) PDF Print E-mail

5/23/2008

Hello friends! Sorry for the delay in posting this week, I was in New York City for my older sister’s graduation from graduate school this past week. So I’ll post again on Monday, and then we can get back to the regular schedule of posting over the weekends. Speaking of posting, I am sad to say that I will only be the Student Blogger for diabetessisters.org for another two months or so because I have graduated from college, and so I’m not technically a “student” anymore. I hope to stay active within the diabetessisters.org community though, and I hope that any of you who are interested will contact me or anyone else at Diabetes Sisters about being the new Student Blogger! This week I want to talk about going to the beach and swimming when you have an insulin pump. Does anyone actually wear their insulin pump while they are swimming or sunbathing? I know that they are some water proof cases and bags on the market these days. I prefer to take my pump off for about an hour or two at a time. I’ll check my blood sugar every hour or so to make sure that my blood sugars are on target (because of the increased physical activity, I usually don’t have to correct.) If I do need some extra insulin though, I just hook up to my pump for a few minutes and then take it off again. I find that this is the easiest way to avoid getting sand and water in my pump, and is also less bothersome for me when I am trying to run around in the sand and sun! To avoid an infusion set tan line I usually just try to put my infusion set below where my bikini is. This also protects the infusion site from sand and water. What do you guys do to get diabetes-ready for the pool or beach?
