My First Pump and Experience with CGMS

I purchased a Medtronic Insulin Pump in 1992.  The Diabetes Team at Duke Medical Center had a policy of sending potential pumpers home with a pump filled with water and then evaluating how comfortable the person was wearing the pump before recommending it.

When I was in my mid thirties my doctor mentioned that there was the possibility of a machine that would be able to deliver insulin throughout the day, rather than having to have multiple injections.

It has occurred to me that I don't have much to say about being a type 1 diabetic for the first 40 years of my life!

I've been asked to blog about my experience as an insulin dependent diabetic over the last 56 years.

I am a psychotherapist in private practice, been married for 36 years and have lived a pretty "normal" life. I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was two and went into a coma. In 1952 having a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes was pretty much a death sentence and there was very little that my local doctor knew about controlling the disease. I've heard most of my life that if I could just live long enough there may be a "cure" during my lifetime. . .and although I don't think I'll be "cured" of diabetes, I do think that with each year the technology makes it easier to manage; and both longevity and quality of life for all of us with diabetes keeps improving.
