Thinking Back...

Thinking back about my first and my current pregnancies, I have felt so different…both physically and emotionally. I find this interesting, because just as every new baby that is born contains a different genetic code and unique personality….I feel like both pregnancies have taken on their own “identity” too!……….

Ready to begin!

November 15th, 2008

Hello fellow sisters in diabetes! My name is Melissa Boscarino and I am thrilled to be taking over for Laura in the "Diabetes and Pregnancy" blog. After reading up on Laura's adventures, I can see that I have quite a void to fill now that she is done with this section! In any case, I've included a little bio about myself and I look forward to hearing from you!

An End to this Chapter (Laura)

10 Weeks Post-Partum

This isn’t really a true farewell, because I’m going to be writing the type I blog. But it is my last “Pregnant with Diabetes Blog.” My chapter on pregnancy is coming to an end…

Strength and Diabetes (Laura)

9 Weeks Post-Partum

So, I have to start this week’s blog writing about the luncheon I attended last week. It was put on by the Behavioral Diabetes Institute (www.behavioraldiabetes.org) and entitled “Celebration of Strength: Honoring Women with Type 1 Diabetes.” It was amazing. I’ve never been in a room surrounded by so many women who understood so much of my life without me having to say a word! Nobody stared or even flinched when someone at the table took their blood sugar, some insulin, or a bolus from their pump. For once I sat through a meal and actually felt normal!

Go, go Gadget Girl (Laura)

7 ½ Weeks Post-Partum

So, I put my CGM (continuous glucose monitor) back on. I’m sort of feeling apathetic about it right now. Here’s the thing… it’s not 100% accurate. I still have to check my blood sugar a lot, even more so in the beginning because I don’t trust the numbers from it. Plus I often find that it’s WAY off. (Today the CGM was reading a 295 blood sugar, but when I took my blood sugar, it was actually 190. Good thing I didn’t correct for that 295.) Or early this morning it was alarming me that my blood sugar was “low,” but actually my blood sugar was 119. Crazy technology. It’s not perfect, and I’ve got to let go of expecting exact blood sugars from it, and instead use it to catch “trends.” I’m going to ask my doctor to help me with that because I don’t think I totally understand how to “see” the trends. It’s a little frustrating because my life is SO far from routine right now that catching a regular trend feels impossible. But I’ll see what my doctor says at the end of this month.
