It has been a very long time since I have done any traveling that put me away from home for more than two nights. Actually, the last time I was away from home for a week at a time, was BD. As in before diabetes – about 5 years ago to be more precise. Whoever said “getting there is half the fun” lied! I will not name names, but what should have been a very nice, quick and simple 2 hour flight from Greensboro NC to Miami FL turned into a very long 8 hour trip that included a stop over to change planes in Dallas TX. That’s right, Greensboro NC, through Dallas TX, to get to Miami FL. Ever seen the movie “Planes, Trains and Automobiles”? As I sat in the terminal in Dallas, exhausted and eating my gourmet lunch of peanut butter crackers fresh from one of my very heavy carry on bags whilst being chatted up by two very sweet but very elderly people – all I could think of was John Candy and Steve Martin in this late 80’s movie! Actually, that is not exactly all I could think of. My first and most pressing thought was: better test this is pretty stressful, I hope I can find something reasonably healthy to eat, and please let me find my metformin in my bag! Sure enough, despite having very little food that day, my blood sugar was really high. Of course we should always test to be sure, but I gotten pretty good at knowing when I get too far outside my comfort zone either high or low. Believe me, I was feeling it that day! Since it could not have been high because of anything I ate, I had to chalk it up to the biggest challenge many of us face keeping our BGL in range: STRESS. This day I was suffering both types of stress, the mental stress of the situation and the physical stress of fatigue taking hold of me after waking that morning at 4:00 AM.
Alls well that ends well….I finally got to beautiful Miami and by 9:30 PM I was safe and sound in my comfy hotel room looking forward to a week of work and fun. Even after the never ending day, I am looking forward to going back as soon as I can. In the meantime I know there's no place like home sweet home. Until next week, Be Well Sisters!
