“That some good can be derived from every event is a better proposition than that everything happens for the best, which it assuredly does not.” – James K. Feibleman

I ran across this quote recently and think it describes how I am choosing to view Diabetes in my life.  I do think it is a choice, you can choose to let the negative aspects of Diabetes run your life, or you can see the good and learn from it.

I certainly did not ask for Diabetes, nor would I wish it on my worst enemy.  But it is here, and it is here to stay, so I am choosing to deal with it.  So far, I have learned a lot about myself and my resolve.  I have learned that I am strong, much stronger than I ever thought I was, and that I am resourceful.  I have learned that I have a lot of people in my life that care about me, and that I can rely on.

I have learned that it is possible to find humor in everything.  For example, I think it is funny and ironic that I have a disease that I like to refer to as “gray.”  Gray is the opposite of “black and white.”  Gray means that there is no set formula for how to control your blood sugar.  You cannot always take 5 units of insulin and know that you will be in range.  There are a lot of variables and you have to think like a pancreas.

Anyone who knows me well knows that I do not like things that are wishy-washy, that are gray and do not always follow a set rule or formula.   If I were in a job interview and they asked me what my weakness was, that would be it.  I have been given this feedback before, and I am very aware of it.

So, I think it is funny that now I have to deal with the unpredictable, the gray, everyday.  In a strange way I am grateful for it.  You could say that I have chosen to see the good in it.  I hope I learn from this experience and apply what I learn to other aspects of my life.

How do you choose to view Diabetes?  What have you learned from it and how has this translated into other aspects of your life?
