Good Week (Markee) PDF Print E-mail

February 28, 2010

I had a pretty good week.  Two strangers made my life easier and they probably did not even realize it.

First, I went out to eat at a local Diner for my best friend’s daughter’s 5th birthday.  The Diner was the location of choice because they serve breakfast all day and pancakes happen to be the birthday girl’s favorite food.

I have only been out to eat a handful of times since my Celiac diagnosis and I have only gone to restaurants that I know have a gluten free menu.  When I asked our server at the Diner if they had a gluten free menu, I was so impressed when he said that while they do not have a gluten free menu, they get this question a lot and he would check with the manager about the foods I should avoid.

Later on during the week, I was preparing to travel for work for the first time since my diagnosis.  I was nervous, not only about what to expect at the airport, since I was going to have insulin, syringes, and snacks in tow, but also about what I was going to eat while away from home.

I was really hoping that I would not have to live off of salads and fruit for the 3 days that I was gone.  Just as all of this traveling anxiety was reaching its peak, I received an email from my soon to be host asking me if I had any dietary restrictions!  I was so impressed and excited.  I cannot explain how much it meant to me that she would even think to ask about my diet.  It was surprising and refreshing, and yes, my hosts were able to accommodate my gluten-free diet.

I hope your week was great too.

Hi Markee!
I had my endoscopy done last week and I'm waiting for the results.
No symptoms of celiac, but my doc kept reminding me that I can be symptom free
and still have it. Hopefully I'll know the results within the next two weeks.

Good luck! Whatever the results are...you will be fine. I think it is great
that you are getting tested. I would argue that all Type 1's get tested because
you can have it and not have symptoms.
