Sara Garrell

Good afternoon Diabetes Sisters! I apologize for the late blog, but I have had a form of the flu over the weekend. Saturday night I woke up with a 102.1 fever, sore throat, body aches, etc…. These symptoms lasted until Monday morning, which is when my fever broke. Even though the fever has subsided, the congestion that was in my head has now moved to my chest and is accompanied by severe coughing. As you all can imagine, being sick has had an effect on my blood sugars.

The majority of the time that I have been sick, my bloodsugars have been over 200. I have tried increasing a temporary basal rate, but it doesn’t affect my levels. Tonight, my mother and I have planned to sit down and create a sick rate plan for my basal rates (Plan B).  How have you all’s experiences with B “sick” rates gone before? Does anyone know any other options? It is important to mention that high bloodsugars during sick times do not only make you feel bad, but there is also the risk of ketones and dehydration. The most important thing is to remember to stay hydrated and take action to keep bloodsugar levels at normal rates. Since I am normally very active, I am so eager to get back into the gym, but I know that my body is not ready. It takes drive and motivation to be an active person, but it also takes discipline to know the limitations of your body. I hope you all have a great week, and hopefully I will be in higher spirits on Sunday.

Sara
