Diabetes can get complicated when injuries get you down (Sara)

October 14, 2009

Good evening Diabetes Sisters!

I apologize for the late blog. This week has been crazy with exams and papers and such. Tonight, I would like to talk about the effects of injuries (primarily exercise related) on bloodsugars. Most college student and student alike, as well as, working people know how difficult it is to incorporate exercise and good overall fitness into our daily lives. Even though it is challenging, exercise has the ability to produce great rewards for blood glucose levels.

Usually, if I manage to exercise for at least an hour during most of the days of the week my bloodsugar will remain fairly stable. For the past three or four weeks I have been going to a group exercise class at the gym on campus. Not long ago I realized that my left knee was a little irritated, but I was still able to push through the Cardio-Pump group exercise class. About four days ago, the pain in my knee became unbearable and I had to layoff of the class and the gym for a few days. Today, when I woke up I had little to no mobility in my knee despite all efforts of icing and taking anti-inflammatory medicine throughout the week. To get to the point, during all of this my bloodsugars have been unstable and primarily moderately high. I feel that because I have not been able to get the regular amount of exercise into my daily schedule my levels have suffered. It is amazing to witness firsthand the effect of exercise on blood sugar levels. Tonight I tried to walk on the treadmill for about thirty minutes and lift weights but my knee was still very sensitive. Does anyone have any suggestions on exercises that will put less strain on my knee or suggestion about bloodsugar control? I would love to hear everyone’s experiences and suggestions, so please feel free to share. Thank you all for listening.

Hi Sara,

Depending on your injury you might want to see a doctor if you've lost
mobility. Do you remember doing anything specific (movement, exercise, etc.)
that started the pain? I'm a triathlete and have been dealing with plantar
fasciitis for a few months and have been swimming and doing pool running and
biking to train. Biking might not be good right now depending on the injury but
you could try swimming. Hope it gets better! If you're on the pump you'll
probably have to increase your basal rates (I've been sick and not training and
had to increase my basal rates by 25%!!)

Good luck!
