Moving to the Rhythm of a Similar Beat (Sara)

August 24, 2009

Good afternoon DiabetesSisters!

So, things have cooled off and settled down from last week, which is definitely a relief! Sunday afternoon, I officially moved back up to Chapel Hill for the semester. Even though coming back to school brings back worries and stress, it is nice to know that this year will be my last of undergraduate studies. As I begin new classes and events, the challenge of figuring out my diabetes schedule remains the same as it always has.

One of our DiabetesSisters, Laura, once mentioned that the Diabetes has programmed each and every one of us to plan ahead, and I believe that this is true to its purest form.  At the beginning of each semester I have to plan out meal times, snack times, exercise times, and much more because my life doesn’t revolve around my diabetes. Diabetes is a part of my life that is integrated into everything I do. It is not only a disease; it is a lifestyle.

Even though I am finding unfamiliarity with my living situation and education, it is nice to have Diabetes to fall back on. No matter where I am or where I am going, Diabetes will always be the backbone of my life… my safeguard. If any of you have felt like this or had similar experiences that concern diabetes or that doesn’t, I would love to hear them. Sharing experiences about our diabetes is what brings us all together as sisters in the fight against diabetes. I hope you all have an amazing week, and I look forward to reading this weeks blogs!

Wow. I've never really thought about how much of a "constant" diabetes
is in my life, but reading that in your blog rang SO true for me. It is that
one thing that is always there. I guess it's the one way diabetes is
predictable. That routine of testing, estimating a meal, bolusing, etc... that
happens almost without thinking now. Too bad the numbers can't always be so
predictable

Good luck with the start of classes!
