August 23, 2009

Yes, this week has been another busy, but great one! (Thank You, Lord!)  As I announced last week, we are currently in the planning stages for the first annual Weekend for Women Conference that will take place on May 22-23, 2010 in conjunction with the TCOYD (www.tcoyd.org) Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina.  Currently, our WfW Planning Committee is being formed and will hold our first meeting on Sunday, October 11th from 3-5pm in Durham, North Carolina.  If you are interested in serving on this committee, please contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.  If there is another topic related to women with diabetes that you would really like to hear about, please email us as soon as possible at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .   Finally, we are also seeking speakers/session leaders for this life-changing event.  If you are interested, or you know someone who would be a good fit, please email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .   There is no doubt that this event could truly transform the lives of many women who are living with diabetes.  From the moment I announced the event, the amount of interest has been “off the charts.”  Every woman I speak to about the Conference can see the tremendous need and benefit for such a program.  The most common response we receive about the Conference from women is, “Wow!  What a great idea!  I have been waiting for this event since my diagnosis!”  For women who have been walking on their diabetes journey alone for years, this will be an opportunity for them to connect with new friends who are also living with diabetes from around the country.  For women with diabetes who could benefit from diabetes education that is targeted and delivered in a way that speaks directly to them, this will be the first national event to meet the challenge.  For women who need motivation and inspiration to identify and reach for their goals in life and in diabetes management, this will be the first Conference to convey that message specifically to women with diabetes.  The atmosphere will be one of camaraderie and sharing among a group of friends who understand each other’s life experiences.  Not only will women walk away recharged about managing their diabetes, but they will also walk away rejuvenated from the “special” treatment they receive and the life-long friendships they have formed.    Women with Type 2 diabetes will learn from each other while also learning from the life experiences of their peers with pre-diabetes, Type 1 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and Type 1.5 diabetes and vice versa.  Although a “divide” has existed between women with different types of diabetes for years, this will be the opportunity for us to come together and erase that useless line…once and for all! The diabetes organizations we speak to about this event are genuinely excited and recognize the void that has existed for a very long time for women with diabetes.  The corporations we speak to about potential sponsorship opportunities are ecstatic about the boundless opportunities that exist for a new, innovative, targeted program specifically for women with diabetes.    I look forward to hearing from you and working with many of you to put together this phenomenal event!
