| | July 2010 DiabetesSisters July Newsletter | A gift from Google!
Greetings DiabetesSisters! Happy July! I hope that everyone is enjoying their summer so far! This month I would like to share some exciting news with you all. DiabetesSisters received a huge in-kind grant from Google and our treasurer on our Board of Directors has been hard at work putting it into place. The grant from Google supplies DiabetesSisters with $10,000 per month of Google Adwords. For those who may not be familiar with Google Adwords, Adwords are the advertisements that you see during a Google search. Adwords is Google’s main source of revenue and for a company to run a successful Adwords campaign can be very costly, especially for nonprofit organizations. Google’s goal of empowering nonprofit organizations by helping them promote their websites via advertising on Google will definitely help DiabetesSisters become an even more prominent player in the online diabetes community. Until next month!Laura Ely | Weekend for Women Conference Series Survey Results 85% response rate for WfW post-event survey What did you enjoy most about the DiabetesSisters Weekend for Women Conference (DS WfW)? • Relaxation and information as well as sharing stories and common issues. • The diversity of people, stories, disease types, etc. Also, great to hear the various beeping noises across the room from the devices. • Being surrounded by others who can relate and specific tips to do at home. • Being with so many beautiful, positive women and hearing their stories. Laughing a lot. • Everything. I've always felt alone but being here with women like me makes me realize I am not alone and I can be successful. • Just meeting women like me! I often feel like I'm the only one...Hearing all the devices beeping made me smile. • Meeting other women (older) who were women that have lived many years with diabetes and pregnant women- gave me inspiration. • Talking with others about diabetes. That connection is something I don't normally have. How can we improve the DS Weekend for Women? • Include more women or take it on the road. • Longer! • Longer, maybe three days instead of 1.5 days. • Make it longer! All day Sat. and Sun, with optional Friday night gathering • More time! • Be longer- maybe Friday night start so we can socialize more.

Meet Cindy Brummitt... A journey begins with a single step and that is just how my life with diabetes began in 1966. I had turned sweet sixteen, but little did I know that sweet would come to mean diabetes! I can’t imagine my life, if I were not a person with diabetes. Diabetes has blessed me in countless ways. It has meant that I have had to persevere and be disciplined even when it really would have been easier not to be.
It is important for every one to be able to have a community of support, which provides him or her with love, inspiration, humor, faith, and strength. One must think positively and keep focused on what is ultimately the key to sustaining a healthy and productive life. Diabetes was the key for me, as it is for all of you. My dreams kept me driven to succeed in all aspects of my life, especially diabetes. Though managing diabetes has changed throughout the years, (blood glucose monitoring, insulin pumps, CGM, and carb counting), successfully managing one’s diabetes remains paramount with regard to how one’s dreams will be fulfilled. I surpassed my original dream of becoming an elementary school teacher. I enjoyed teaching elementary school, prior to completing a master’s degree in Special Education, as well as a master’s degree in administration. Diabetes is easy compared to being a principal! Medication, monitoring, healthy eating, and exercise are cornerstones to excellent diabetes management. Exercise became a driving force behind successfully managing my diabetes. I have been fortunate to be involved in the dance and exercise fields throughout my life, both as a student and teacher. I currently work for an athletic club teaching aquatic group exercise classes, working in the Marketing Department, and providing support as a Health and Wellbeing Phone Coach. The clients I service also indirectly provide me with necessary ongoing support. Learning is a life-long process and diabetes is life-long. I have always explored opportunities to strengthen and build my knowledge as it relates to the newest developments in the field of diabetes’ research, as well as how advancements, such as an insulin pump or CGM can assist me in achieving the best A1C results. My team of doctors, which as an individual with diabetes is extensive, has given me the tools, including but not limited to, education, guidance, and support in order to achieve both short and long term goals. It is said that there isn’t an “I” in TEAM, but when you have diabetes there is an “I”, and that is YOU! You must put forth your personal best to achieve your diabetes personal best. This spotlight would not be complete without highlighting, once again, the value of having support, as well as, sharing support. (DiabetesSisters is all about support…right?) I was invited to a local diabetes support group in 1972, and before I knew it, I was actively involved at several levels with the American Diabetes Association. My volunteer work took me down many avenues including being selected as Northwest Suburban Branch President, newsletter editor, Member of the Board of Directors, Public Conference Chairperson and presenter, Diabetes Advocate, peer mentor, support group leader, Bike Ride Plus Chairperson, and recipient of the 1992 Volunteer of the Year Award. What I remember most from these experiences are all the people I met who inspired me to keep a positive outlook and see diabetes as an opportunity, not a challenge! I thank DiabetesSisters for allowing me to share my diabetes journey. DiabetesSisters has taken the support I am receiving and sharing to the next level. It is up to each of us to embrace our diabetes’ life and extend support, strength, determination, and love to one another. I hope you will join our sisters and myself, as together we take the next steps and enjoy a healthy and happy life with diabetes! I would like to dedicate this article to my husband, who always finds the silver linings in the clouds for me! | Diabetes Conference Update
Brandy Barne's report from ADA, CWD and the Roche Social Media Summit In June 2010, I had the honor of representing DiabetesSisters at three (yes, 3!) important events in the diabetes community. First, I attended the ADA Scientific Sessions from June 25-June 29th at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. The number of people in attendance at the sessions and in the exhibit hall was astounding. It seemed as if everybody who was anybody in the diabetes world was there! I met many of those people such as Joy Pape (author), Kelly Rawlings (Diabetic Living), Paula Ford-Martin (dLife), Bill Polonsky (Behavioral Diabetes Institute) and Howard Steinberg (dLife) for the first time! I also got to see and spend time with some dear old friends like Manny Hernandez (Diabetes Hands Foundation), David Edelman (Diabetes Daily), Elizabeth Edelman (Diabetes Daily), Amy Tenderich (Diabetes Mine), Tom Karlya (Diabetes Research Institute) and Kelly Kunik (Diabetesaliciousness). I attended a few sessions, but I must admit that most of them went over my head after about the first 10 minutes. So, I don’t have anything new and innovative to report on (darn!) I did see a new meter for kids that was pretty innovative. It was Bayer’s new Didget meter. It actually plugs into a Nintendo DS (helps kids keep up with it) and it uses the gaming system to reward kids for testing consistently. I also saw the not-yet-approved POGO meter, which is an all-in-one meter that stores the test strips, lancet, and lancing device into one compact system. Almost all of the pharmaceutical companies have their own patient-focused website. I was excited to see a new emphasis on the psychosocial well-being of people with diabetes. For example, Novo Nordisk (along with the International Diabetes Federation) a global program to improve psychosocial support for people with diabetes in 2001 called the DAWN (Diabetes Attitiudes, Wishes, and Needs) Study. It involved over 5,000 people with diabetes from 13 different countries. DAWN was initiated to increase the understanding of how people perceived their diabetes in order to develop better outcomes for treatment. You can read more about it here: http://www.dawnstudy.com/ News_and_activities/Documents/ BG09_DAWN.pdf. The Roche Social Media Summit was a phenomenal event as usual! I was asked to speak to the group about DiabetesSisters success and share some best practices. After meeting with representatives from ADA and AADE to express patient concerns, the group enjoyed an evening of Wii! That’s right! There were three different games- bowling, tennis, and table tennis. The winners got to donate their winnings to the charity of their choice! DiabetesSisters earned $250! Thank you David Edelman and Diabetes Daily! Finally, the Children with Diabetes Conference provided a unique opportunity to observe children with diabetes in a setting that was made just for them. The Banquet (Teen Dance) on Thursday evening was memorable for me…and I know there are many young people out there who will remember that night forever—a dance full of people their age who are just like them. By the way, I have never seen so many test strips scattered on the floor throughout a hotel. I was so elated to know that, most likely, they weren’t mine this time!
